A welcoming environment for dermatology services

Your generous donations have helped create a new, calming space for dermatology patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

The dermatology department relocated from St Thomas’ Hospital to The Bermondsey Centre at Guy’s Hospital in 2016. Special artwork, which was influenced by patients, has helped make the environment less clinical and more inviting, thanks to your support.

On the move

Before the relocation project, dermatology day services were in different areas across the hospital, meaning patients had to travel from one area to another for their appointments. Whilst bringing the service together to become more streamlined, the team also wanted an improved environment.

‘Our previous space was very clinical,’ recalls Ann Bowrin-Soyer, Matron for Medical and Specialist Dermatology. ‘We knew that having art around would make the environment more modern and lively, which in turn would reduce stress levels among patients and staff.’

Beautiful, bespoke artwork

An artist in residence was involved in the relocation project from the beginning, thanks to the support of donations. The team spoke to patients and staff to find out the kinds of artwork they’d want to see in the new space, and fed this back to the artist so they could create bespoke pieces specially for the new department.

‘Staff and patients have both said the artwork contributes to a better hospital environment that’s less clinical, and that it’s more welcoming and bright than before,’ says Ann.

‘Patients comment all the time on how they enjoy having the artwork in the treatment rooms, not just the corridors. It’s a good topic for discussion between the patients and staff when treatments are taking place.

‘Without donations, we wouldn’t have such a modern space for our patients to attend their appointments and for our staff to work in.’

Donations help enhance the environment and care at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in many varied ways. Find out more about the ways you can get involved, and help us continue improvements like these for our patients and staff.
