Survivorship Team, helping patients on the road to recovery
The Survivorship Team was set up at Guy’s Cancer to support patients who have undergone cancer treatment. The team works to help patients on their road to recovery so they are not alone on their difficult journeys, and helps them learn to live with and beyond cancer.
The service is vital for patients like John, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016. After having major surgery to remove the cancer, he was daunted by what lay ahead and struggled to find motivation.
’At a time when I was feeling lost, worried and daunted by the journey ahead, the Survivorship Team offered support in so many different ways,’ says John. ‘They took the time to get to know me and understand what I needed.’
Survivorship Coordinator Saskia and her dedicated team at Guy’s Cancer worked closely with John to provide him with a tailored recovery plan. This included walking groups with other recovering cancer patients, a 14-week weight loss programme involving dietitians and physiotherapists, and health and well-being day events, which John found particularly helpful.
‘Thanks to Guy's Cancer, I didn't have to walk the road to recovery on my own,’ says John. ‘I still remember the first day Saskia came into my physio session at Guy's to talk about other services available to patients.
’The Survivorship Team offered support in so many different ways. They took the time to get to know me and understood what I needed. I am so glad I got talking to Saskia that day and will be forever thankful for the support they offered - and continue to offer me two years down the line.
‘The amazing work they do really would not be possible without support from people like you and me.’
The wide-ranging aspects of this service, and the incredible impact on patients it has, could not have been achieved without the help of our fantastic supporters.
