Golf day for the Sudesh Bedi Memorial Fund

In 2008, Ashwin Bedi was busy preparing for his mother Sudesh’s 75th birthday party when she sadly passed away from stomach cancer.

Instead of cancelling the party, Ashwin decided to use the opportunity to host a charity fundraising event in her memory.

‘My mum had a profound and lasting effect on all who came in contact with her, not least myself, my siblings and our respective families,’ he says. ‘So I decided to go ahead with the scheduled party, only now it was going to be a dinner-dance charity fundraiser in her name – something that would be a fitting tribute to mark her life.’

The event was a success and the first of many. Ashwin has since organised annual charity dinners and golf days, donating the money to further research in cancer.

Ashwin heard about the Cancer Centre Appeal through a chance encounter at a charity event his daughter was singing at. He was sitting next to Shelley Riphagen, a senior doctor who at the time worked at Guy’s Hospital and was involved in fundraising.

‘We got talking about the work that we both do for charity and Shelley very kindly invited me to Guy’s to see what was being fundraised for,’ says Ashwin. ‘After seeing the great work, I decided to get involved.’

Since this meeting, Ashwin has organised three annual charity golf days over three years and raised an impressive £32,000 for Guy’s Cancer, contributing significantly to the building of the Cancer Centre at Guy’s. In recognition, the Sudesh Bedi Memorial Fund appears on the Cancer Centre donor wall.

Ashwin’s fourth charity golf day for Guy’s Cancer took place on Thursday 21 June 2018, nearly a decade after the passing of his mother. He’s hopeful that the money raised can help those in need and fund much needed equipment, medication, trials and more.

‘Cancer is such a terrible disease and we must fight to find a cure for the many diseases that exist,’ he says. ‘We have already seen the progress made, so if we can all keep going and do more we can speed up the process to finding a cure.

‘The golf day is a great way to raise money. It’s amazing to see so many friendly faces that come out to have a fun day of golf and support the charity. We start off with breakfast, a round of golf, dinner and a few drinks with some fantastic auction and raffle prizes. Then, the day ends with trophies for the winners. It’s a lot of hard work but all worth it.’
