The Cancer Centre at Guy’s

David's story

David's story

David Giles was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010. He received life-saving treatment at Guy’s and is now on the road to making a full recovery.

‘To hear the word cancer is difficult to describe,’ David recalls. ‘First you don’t believe it, but once you take it on board, it’s pretty scary.’

David underwent surgery at Guy’s and still goes back for check-ups. He was unable to walk to the end of his driveway when he first came home but is now back to working full time.

‘If it wasn’t for Guy’s I wouldn’t be here today, they saved my life,’ he says. ‘The level of continuity and professionalism and expertise is second to none. I can vouch for that – I’ve seen and done it, bought the T-shirt and am back on the street.’

In our new Cancer Centre, patients like David will receive ground-breaking treatments and the finest care possible in a warm and welcoming place that provides much-needed comfort at such a difficult time. Together, by making Guy’s Cancer Centre a reality, we can transform people’s experience of cancer in London and the South East and dramatically improve their chances of beating it.

‘The one thing you can be sure of is that you are treated an individual and not just a number,’ says David, who is now looking forward to seeing his grandchildren growing up.

‘I support the Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal because Guy’s saved my life and the quicker we can get the new building and facilities up and running the more lives can be saved, he says.
