Why we need your help

Guy’s and St Thomas’ are two of London's best known teaching hospitals, treating more than 2 million patients each year. We’re experts in many areas of treatment and care, including cancer, obstetrics and gynaecology, and cardiology.

St Thomas’ is one of the largest maternity services, delivering 6,800 babies per year and providing care for many women with complex needs.

Thanks to generous donations, we’ve been able to buy equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit including incubators, a ventilator and specially shaped pillows which cradle and support extremely premature babies.

It is our ambition to be one of the best centres for cancer care in the world.

To achieve this we are building a state of the art Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital - designed by and for patients. They told us they didn’t want it to feel like a hospital – and research has shown that when patients feel more relaxed, they get better quicker.

We’re putting the radiotherapy suite where patients can look out of the window during treatment rather than the basement which is more usual, and making sure that all cancer treatments are under one roof so patients don’t need to travel far.

We’ll care for patients and carry out research to develop new treatments all within the same building, narrowing the gap between laboratory studies and real patient care. One patient who has benefited from taking part in clinical trials at Guy’s is Emma Jakiel.

Emma was diagnosed seven years ago with non-small cell lung cancer. She underwent traditional therapy, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but her cancer returned. So she enrolled in a clinical trial.

‘[The trial] gave me hope – not that I could ever be cured but there were pinnacles of my life that I still wanted to reach and achieve,’ says Emma. ‘At the time I had a 12-year-old son. I’ve been lucky to actually be here for his 18th birthday, his 19th birthday.’

All gifts fund projects like this that work towards improving every aspect of patient care, by speeding up diagnosis and enhancing treatment across a range of conditions.

It means we can go above and beyond in the care we provide every day. Find out about the people who have already been inspired to leave a gift to Guy's
